The anticipated day was finally here and the buzzing excitement of the crowd filled the UJ Sports Field with so much life. The two Johannesburg Varsity rugby teams met and the tension in the field was palpable. Each walked on to that field with the intentions of winning the game.

FNB UJ welcomed FNB Wits with a 3-point score, a welcoming Wits acknowledged with a 3-point score too. And that is how the game began. After our continued wins, one could easily assume that UJ would dominate the field from the first whistle. This assumption was crushed by Wits as they came prepared to take our boys on. The first 40 minutes of the game Wits played good rugby with player no.11, Luxolo ‘Lux’ Ntsepe giving the UJ players a run for their money. Their good team work and continued efforts to stay ahead paid off as they were leading on the score board by half time.

However, when the second 40 minutes began UJ came back more determined than before. This reflected on the score board. During the game, it seemed like some of the UJ players were suffering from ‘butter fingers’ with the ball slipping right out of their hands. This did not weaken their gruelling attack and strong defence though Wits gave as good as they got. While eyes were on Aphiwe Dyantyi, the Wits defence worked hard to get the ball away from him. This did not deter the collaboration between him and team captain Jannes Snyman.

The intensity and tension of the last three minutes defined the game. UJ heavily defended while Wits was viciously on the attack. Both teams gave it their all and left it all on the field. At the end of the night UJ was victorious with 5 points more than Wits (28-23). Jo Hanko De Villiers from UJ was crowned Player that Rocks.

Speaking of crowning, the beautiful Zanele Leon was crowned Miss Varsity UJ 2017. The crowning happened during the half time. All the Miss Varsity UJ finalists looked breath taking. From the public voting which was conducted on the UJ Sports page on Facebook, Zanele came out victorious.
